Instructions for Paying Federal Income Taxes Due Online
To electronically pay estimated tax payments or balances due to the IRS please use the link below.
When making a payment, it is important that the IRS is informed about what the payment is for so that the payment is correctly posted to your account.
ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENTS:
When paying QUARTERLY ESTIMATES electronically, it will be important to choose the following options:
Reason for Payment: Estimated Tax
Apply Payment To: 1040-ES
Tax Period for Payment: Be sure to use the year that the estimated tax payment needs to be applied to (this comes into play mostly with Q4 payments being made after the end of that calendar year).
When verifying your identity, be sure to answer the questions based on the year you selected in the “Tax Year for Verification” box.
BALANCE DUE PAYMENTS:
When paying BALANCES DUE electronically, it will be important to choose the following options:
Reason for Payment: Balance Due
Apply Payment To: Income Tax – Form 1040
Tax Period for Payment: Be sure to use the year that the balance due needs to be applied to, not necessarily the year you are paying it in.
When verifying your identity, be sure to answer the questions based on the year you selected in the “Tax Year for Verification” box.
