The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides numerous tax incentives for individuals to invest in energy-effiecient products:
Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit (expires December 31, 2016): This credit applies to individual taxpayers for items such as solar hot water heaters, geothermal heat pumps, and wind turbines.
Residential Energy Property Credit (expired December 31, 2014*): This credit applies to home improvements such as adding insulation, energy-efficient exterior windows and energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems. You must obtain a manufacturer's certificate in order to take the credit.
(*This credit originally expired on December 31, 2013 but was extended at the end of the year for 2014. The same may occur again for 2015; however, we will most likely not know until December 2015.)
For information on energy-efficient products, visit the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star Website; not all Energy Star products qualify for the tax incentive.
